Back in the day, frontiersman knew the value of carrying a rifle and a pistol. The rifle kept a man alive providing food, and a pistol kept a man safe from sudden close range attack from man and beast. I solo hunt big game. That means I’m hunting all alone so far back in the wilderness that screams for help fall on deaf ears. There’s no 911 call where I hunt. I commonly carry a .45 colt hallow point revolver as my self defense sidearm … there’s no jamming problem in a fight. Bear spray works fine for nuisance bears, but it falls short when an enraged bear decides to attack you. Bear spray is manufactured by the same folks who make police grade tear gas. There’s a 10-15 second delay before the spray’s disabling affect takes hold. That’s enough time for a bear to do a lot of damage, if the enraged bear takes notice at all. A good caliber handgun works.
