Many kids enjoy fishing, and whether you’re getting ready to take your little ones on their first fishing excursion yourself or sending them out with Grandpa, you may be wondering what kids should wear for fishing.

While a few details may change depending on the weather and location, dressing your kids for fishing is quite simple. A comfortable shirt and pants with some sturdy shoes are all you really need. See the checklists below for some additional accessories depending on the details of your trip.

Summer Fishing Outerwear for Kids

The most common time of year for people to enjoy fishing is the summer. Because of the seasonal heat, you don’t have to worry about dressing your kids in layers, but you still want to find kids’ fishing clothes that are both comfortable and functional.

Proper kids’ fishing clothes vary slightly depending upon the particular fishing environment, but you can use the following checklist for the most basic needs for all occasions. Then reference the other sections below for additional needs.

Shirt: In most cases, a thin t-shirt is perfectly fine for fishing in the summer. You may want to add a nylon cooling shirt over a base layer if your kiddo will be directly in the sun for several hours.

Shorts/pants: Both shorts and long pants make good fishing attire. Shorts are great for kids who will be fishing in scorching weather and will get a lot of direct sunlight. You might want to opt for pants if your little one will fish in a wooded environment that is likely to have ticks.

Shoes with good traction: Ordinary tennis shoes or sandals are fine for fishing in most situations. Just make sure to bring shoes that can get wet if your kids will be stepping into the water to fish. If they’ll be on a boat or a dock, make sure they have good grip on wet surfaces. If on the bank, be sure they have good traction so they don’t slip in the water by accident.

Hat: It could be a wide-brimmed hat or a baseball cap, but either way your child should wear a hat. This keeps the sun off their cheeks and out of their eyes.

Sunscreen: While it doesn’t fall into the clothing category, you should never forget to lather your kids up with sunscreen before sending them on a fishing trip in the summer.

2 kids fishing by the river in a hot day

Lake or Boat Fishing

If your kids are fishing from a boat on a lake, they need clothes to shield them from the sun. The list above should cover the basics, but make sure they also have the following:

Sturdy shoes: Sturdy shoes with good grip are essential for keeping them from sliding around on a slick deck.

Sunglasses: The sun and its reflection can be really bright when you’re out on the water, so sunglasses are a must!

Lifejacket: A proper-fitting lifejacket is probably the most important item when fishing from a boat or dock over deep water.

River Fishing

Fishing on a riverbank can be more laid back than in other environments. You’ll usually find a lot of trees and bushes to provide shade. Your kids still need comfortable clothes, but a hat and sunglasses may not as crucial if they are fishing from a shady river bank.

Focus instead on dressing them to ward off ticks and to protect their extremities from scratchy underbrush by using the following list:

Long pants: You want to keep their legs protected from both bugs and scratchy twigs and branches.

Comfortable shoes: Some sturdy shoes with good traction are important when your kids are standing on an uneven riverbank. Sandals will probably be too slick and not offer enough support. Dress them in shoes that will keep them feeling solid on a muddy bank.

Ocean Fishing

Deep-sea fishing is an awesome experience, but it exposes your kids to a ton of direct sunlight. You want to dress them in fishing clothes that help them stay cool but offer protection from the sun’s rays. Be sure to use the basic checklist and double-check for the following items:

Sturdy footwear with rubber soles: You’ll want your kiddo to be steady on the boat deck when deep-sea fishing. While any shoe with a rubber sole will work, deck shoes are your best bet.

Hat and sunglasses: These are essential accessories for deep-sea fishing. A hat shields your kid’s face from the sun, and a nice pair of sunglasses will protect young eyes from the sun’s harsh glare on the water.

Light jacket: Even when it’s summer, it’s a good idea to send your kid with a light jacket when on the ocean. The cool ocean breeze can cool them off quickly, even when the sun is out.

Life vest: Don’t forget a lifejacket any time your child is on a boat!

Inclement Weather

If there’s a chance that your kiddo may get caught in a rainstorm while fishing, you may want to take a few special measures when dressing them for the occasion.

You can use whichever checklist corresponds with their fishing environment and season but add the following to help your children stay dry and comfortable in inclement weather:

Rain jacket: A good rain jacket that will repel the water and keep your kids dry will make their experience much better. (But skip the umbrella! They won’t be able to hold both a fishing rod and an umbrella at the same time.)

Rain boots: Anytime little feet get wet, things get pretty miserable. A pair of simple rubber rain boots will help them last longer in inclement weather.

Spring and Fall Fishing Attire for Kids

2 kids holding fishing rods

In most regions, the spring and fall seasons feature mild temperatures that are perfect for fishing. You don’t need to worry about bundling your kids up, and you also don’t need to be concerned about them getting overheated. Keeping them comfortable in their fishing environment should be your top concern.

In general, however, you can use the same checklists as for summer, then add just a couple of things for the cooler weather such as:

Jacket: A light to medium jacket with a hood can help keep the cool air off their little ears.

Long pants: Wearing long pants can keep those pesky ticks off their legs. They can also keep your little ones warmer if necessary.

Winter and Ice Fishing Clothing for Kids

toddler ice fishing

Most people don’t go fishing in the winter, but if you live in a cold climate, you may want to give your little ones ice fishing experience.

The trick to keeping your kids warm and toasty during an ice fishing excursion is to dress them in layers. If they start to get overheated, they can always shed a layer or two, but dressing them in this fashion is the best way to help them stay warm in freezing temperatures.

Use this checklist for ice fishing:

Wool socks: Keeping feet warm and dry is often the hardest part; wool socks are the best at this.

Base layers for top and bottom: A good base layer can make all the difference when trying to stay warm. Look for a thin layer that will cover your kiddos from neck to ankle.

Long-sleeved shirt

Long pants

Fleece hat

Neck muffler or scarf

Mittens or gloves

Snow boots

Snow pants

Heavy coat

Dress the Part

Dressing your kiddos to go fishing is a pretty simple endeavor. No special equipment is needed. Just check the weather and the location and use the appropriate checklist(s). Your little ones are sure to have a lot of exciting stories after their first fishing trip!

An unexpected storm can turn a pleasant fishing trip into a miserable outing in a hurry. Foul weather rain gear allows you to enjoy your favorite activity in almost any weather condition. However, gear that gets too dirty can lose its waterproofing ability. Fortunately, there’s an easy solution to this problem. Learn how to wash wet weather gear.

Most foul weather rain gear is machine washable and can be tumble or line-dried, but check the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model to be sure. When necessary, reactivate your gear’s durable water repellent coating by using a wash-in or spray-on product.

Many fishermen fear that putting their gear in the washing machine will destroy the waterproof coating. However, it actually can make it work better. Read on for details.

What You Need To Wash Rain Gear

  • Washing machine
  • Dryer
  • Technical fabric cleaner
  • Durable waterproof repellent spray or wash
  • Iron
  • Towel or cloth

See the links near the end of the article for specific product recommendations.

How To Wash Wet Weather Gear: Step-by-Step Instructions

There is a four-step process for how to wash wet weather gear. It usually takes between three to 24 hours, depending on the manufacturer’s instructions for drying your garment.

This process applies to technical woven fabrics such as Gore-Tex or similar. If your fishing bibs or foul weather gear are made of PVC, rubber, or similar material, these directions won’t apply. That kind of gear will need to be hand washed and cannot go through a washing machine or dryer. Again, check the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step One: Spot Treat Stains by Hand

  • Read the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Spot treat stains with a small amount of tech wash.
  • Allow the garment to sit for a few minutes before rubbing or buffing the stained area to loosen the debris.

Step Two: Wash Gear in Your Washing Machine

  • Check all the pockets and remove any objects.
  • Zip the front, pockets, and pit zips.
  • Fasten loose straps and flaps.
  • Wash foul weather gear separately from other laundry.
  • Do not wash more than two items at a time.
  • A technical fabric cleaner is recommended because the additives in some detergents can degrade the performance of your gear. Do not use powdered detergent, bleach, or fabric softener.
  • Read the instructions on the cleaner you are using and add the specified amount to the detergent dispenser of your washing machine three minutes after you start the wash. Waiting allows the product to spread throughout the water and coat the items evenly.
  • Wash on the normal cycle.
  • Run the rinse cycle a second time.

Step Three: Re-Waterproof Your Gear

Now that you know how to wash wet weather gear, this step covers reactivating the DWR coating.

For Rain Gear Without a Liner

  • Add a wash-in waterproofing product to the detergent dispenser.
  • Wash gear on the delicate cycle.

For Lined Foul Weather Fishing Gear

  • Remove the garment from the washing machine and hang it to dry.
  • Apply a spray-on waterproofing product while the garment is still wet. Spray about 10 inches away from the garment to achieve an even coating. Make sure you get the cuffs and back of the shoulders where waterproofing wears off the most easily.
  • Look for dry spots and respray them.

Step Four: Dry Your Gear

  • Follow the instructions on the care label
  • Unlined gear can be tumble-dried on a warm setting or air-dried. After the initial drying, put it in the dryer on warm for 20 minutes to reactive the DWR coating.
  • Most gear takes about 24 hours to air dry

Common Rain Gear Materials

GORE-TEX® fabric

Most sportfishing foul weather gear is constructed from waterproof breathable materials with a DWR coating. These materials allow sweat and condensation to escape garments to keep you comfortable while preventing water from weather conditions or spray from entering the garment.

These materials aren’t as waterproof as the PVC materials often used by commercial fishermen, but they are more comfortable to wear.

GORE-TEX®

GORE-TEX® is one of the most popular materials used in foul weather gear. It is constructed from a mineral called fluorspar. The material has tiny holes that are too small for water from rain and spray to penetrate the material but allow condensation and sweat to escape.

This makes GORE-TEX® ideal for water and windproof yet breathable, foul-weather gear.

The material on its own isn’t durable enough to use in clothing, so garments made with GORE-TEX® laminate the material into other kinds of fabric. A DWR coating is applied to this fabric to prevent water from soaking into it.

Gore inspects all companies that use its fabric. This ensures they glue, tape, and sew the fabric correctly to maintain its weather resistance.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Washing GORE-TEX® Foul Weather Gear

Gore’s recommendation for how to wash wet weather gear varies only slightly from the general advice:

1. You can wash GORE-TEX® with other laundry, but do not wash with heavily soiled garments.

2. Tumble dry using the gentle cycle and warm setting on your dryer, unless the garment care instructions tell you to hang dry the garment instead. Do not dry at high temperatures. Gore recommends line-drying to reduce energy consumption and environmental impact.

Stain Removal

1. Use the same detergent you plan to wash the garment in. Gore does not recommend using stain removers.

2. Rub some detergent onto the stained area.

3. Wash using your washing machine’s prewash cycle or if your machine does not have a prewash cycle, presoak the garment.

4. Wash per the instructions above.

GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY™ Products: Special Instructions

Do not apply DWR to GORE-TEX® products with a persistent beading surface, such as GORE-TEX® SHAKEDRY™. These garments have no textile outer layer or DWR coating. Machine wash on delicate. Do not dry clean, tumble dry, bleach, or iron.

Dry Cleaning

GORE-TEX®, except for SHAKEDRY™, can be dry cleaned; however, check the care instructions first. If you dry clean the garment, ask for distilled hydrocarbon solvent rinse and a spray-on or wash-in DWR repellent treatment with heat reactivation. Home dry cleaning is not recommended.

Saltwater

Saltwater will not harm your GORE-TEX® fabric. However, salt does attract moisture, so it is a good idea to remove it from your foul weather gear after it has been exposed to saltwater.

Rinse your GORE-TEX® gear after you have been fishing or boating in saltwater. Freshwater works best, but if you don’t have access to it, rinsing in seawater is better than not rinsing.

Durable Water-Repellent Coatings

Most rainwear is treated with a water-repelling coating that causes water to bead up and roll off the garment instead of soaking it into the fabric.  This coating doesn’t work properly when it gets too worn or dirty.

Signs Your DWR Coating Needs to be Restored or Replenished

Learning how to wash wet weather gear is only part of the equation. You also need to know when to restore the DWR coating. If you notice these signs, try restoring or replenishing your water-repellent coating:

  • Fabric appears wet on the outside
  • Garment collects condensation on the inside
  • Gear feels heavier

Nylon

Some cheaper raingear is made from nylon coated with DWR. Pro foul weather gear incorporates nylon with other weatherproofing materials, such as GORE-TEX® or TORAY®. Nylon tricot is often used to reinforce other fabrics.

Polyester

Polyester fabrics are frequently used in the liners of insulated raingear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Wash Rain Gear in the Washing Machine?

It depends on the materials, but for the most part, yes. The manufacturer recommends machine washing GORE-TEX® products because it helps keep the microscopic pores from getting clogged.

Avoid using regular laundry detergents. They leave a residue on your gear that attracts water and degrades the water-repellent properties.

Can You Wash Grundéns?

Grundéns’ recommendation for washing fishing bibs or wet weather gear is to use Nikwax Tech Wash or similar products for washing Grundens gear and then hang it to dry.

How To Wash Gill Foul Weather Gear?

Gill recommends machine washing with a non-biological detergent and tumble dry on low. Do not bleach, iron, or dry clean.

How To Remove Odors From GORE-TEX®?

The best way to avoid smelly foul weather gear is never to put it away wet and dirty. This can cause mold and mildew to grow. If you already have a moldy GORE-TEX® jacket, these steps may help:

1. Read the manufacturer’s instructions.

2. Soak the item in a mixture of one part white vinegar and one part water overnight.

3. Follow the GORE-TEX® instructions for cleaning the garment.

Conclusion

There is no need to fear the washing machine when it comes to washing wet weather fishing gear. Most products can be machine washed, and keeping your gear clean helps it function better.

Remember always to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and avoid putting your gear away when it is dirty or wet. The extra time you take to care of your gear will pay off the next time you get stuck out in the weather.

Grundens is one of the most famous fishing gear manufacturers globally, and its bibs are popular with both recreational and commercial fishermen. Are you wondering which Grundens to buy?

We studied the Grundens’ fishing bib lineup and chose seven that we think work best for most people and cover most scenarios. Our Grundens bib comparison will help you know which might be best for you.

Fishermen know that fishing on a boat in the cold winter elements can be brutal. When the wet winter months arrive, seasoned anglers pull out fishing bibs.

Bibs can help protect the body from the cold wind, rain, salt spray, and other harsh weather conditions. They also help keep the grime and stench of fish off your clothes.

Fishing bibs are similar to overalls and are worn over the legs and the chest. You typically wear them over different layers of clothing to enhance warmth.

While the best Grundens bibs are ideal for most foul weather activities, there are differences to consider, including price, usability, use, and consumer feedback.

Why Grundens Bibs?

Started more than 100 years ago by the son of a Swedish fisherman, Grundens is an icon in the rain gear industry. Its Dark and Stormy rain gear collection is a favorite of commercial fishermen, and its bib collection is a must for both professional and serious recreational outdoors people.

Grundens bibs are relatively affordable, durable, and functional. If you’re in the market for this kind of gear, they should be on your radar.

However, there are numerous types of bibs, and there are differences to consider. Some bibs are better for cold weather conditions, while others do better in warmer climates.

Some products are more expensive because they are geared toward commercial fishermen that regularly deal with harsh conditions. Other bibs are more affordable and are best for recreational anglers who only fish from a boat in bad weather a few times a year.

The 7 Best Grundens Bibs Compared

Wondering which Grundens to buy? The company produces multiple bibs for all types of climates and fishermen. Consider the following Grundens bib comparison to find the best product for you:

Which Grundens to Buy?

Wondering which Grundens to buy? No product works for every type of fisherman, and you should do your research before making a purchase.

The Weather Watch Fishing Bibs are an excellent option for those new to fishing or those on a budget. The Buoy X Gore-Tex Bibs are the most durable bibs on this list and are a good choice for fishers who work in cold weather climates.

The Herkules 16 Bibs are an iconic Grundens product and are a good option for recreational and professional anglers. They are moderately priced, durable, and flexible.

It is no secret that dealing with volatile weather is a reality for many fishermen.

Whether you participate in commercial or recreational fishing, buying foul-weather rain gear is a necessity. While countless companies sell rain products, Grundens and Simms are two of the most reputable manufacturers.

Both companies offer a wide range of quality rain gear items at both affordable and high-end prices. With so many similarities between these two companies, how do you know which one to choose?

Read below for a comprehensive Grundens vs. Simms foul weather rain gear comparison.

Grundens vs. Simms Foul Weather Rain Gear

When it comes to quality gear for anglers, Grundens and Simms are two of the most well-known names in the industry.

Founded more than 100 years ago by the son of a Swedish fisherman, Grundens has developed into a global brand that designs, develops, and produces a variety of waterproof clothing for commercial fishers.

Grundens is a recognized leader in the commercial fishing industry, and many commercial fishermen own several products created by this Swedish powerhouse.

Although Simms was not founded until 1980, it has produced some of the most groundbreaking rain gear in the industry. Headquartered in Bozeman, Montana, Simms owns several state-of-the-art design and manufacturing facilities focused on coming up with the newest innovations in fair and foul weather fishing gear.

Pros and Cons of Grundens

Grundens logoGrundens is a solid choice for purchasing foul-weather rain gear. Read below for a few pros and cons of buying Grundens items:

Quality products: Grundens has designed and manufactured high-quality protective clothing and rain gear for generations. Its clothing is waterproof and created to function in the most challenging environments. A favorite manufacturer of commercial fishermen, Grundens is known for developing high-quality products.

Affordability: Grundens products are durable, but they are also highly affordable. From rain slickers to rubber suits, Grundens products are within most consumers’ budgets.

Wide Selection of Products: Grundens offers a comprehensive line of rain gear, including bibs, jackets, shirts, pants, boots, and accessories. It offers various models of each product to fit a wide variety of weather conditions.

Repair and Replacement Policy: If a product covered by warranty fails because of a manufacturing issue, Grundens will repair the product or replace it at no cost. Only branded products are covered under this repair policy, but it is a significant advantage if you regularly purchase a lot of gear.

Limited Warranties: While Grundens has a generous repair policy on branded products, its warranties have many exclusions. Warranties do not cover damage covered by routine wear and tear, accident, or improper care. However, Grundens will repair damaged clothing for a reasonable cost.

While the limited warranties may deter some consumers, the advantages of Grundens products far outweigh the disadvantages.

Pros and Cons of Simms

Simms logoWhile Grundens was founded more than 100 years ago, Simms has established itself as a leader in the rain gear industry since it was founded in 1980. Read below for a few pros and cons of choosing Simms products:

Durability: Simms is known for producing high-quality, durable products. For instance, its Challenger Jacket comes equipped with seamless stitching, making it very difficult to rip it accidentally. With proper care, most Simms products will last for several years.

Good Customer Service: Simms outperforms Grundens when it comes to customer service. Its customer service agents are friendly, helpful, and readily available.

Extended Warranties: Simms offers some of the best warranties on the market. Simms stands by the quality of its products and offers extended warranties on various items.

Convenient Features: Simms manufacturers products equipped with convenient features, including adjustable hoods, chest pockets, and water-resistant fabrics. Several clothing items also feature PrimaLoft insulation materials, which help you retain body warmth in the coldest temperatures.

Pricing: While Simms products are not necessarily high-end, they are more expensive than Grundens items. For instance, Simms bibs are more costly than other brands. However, the quality of the items often justifies the price.

While some products are more expensive than other leading brand items, Simms uses high-quality, durable materials on all items.

Simms vs. Grundens Rain Jacket Product Comparison

Both Simms and Grundens offer a full rain gear line, including rain jackets. Read below to compare Grudens’ Dark and Stormy rain jacket and Simms’ Challenger jacket.

Grundens Dark and Stormy rain gear are one of the reasons the company has such an excellent reputation among commercial fishers. The jacket is outfitted with material designed to repel water and retain body heat.

The rain jacket is made from eVent fabric, making it flexible while still providing superior water resistance. The jacket has numerous pockets, high-quality zippers, and internal storage compartments.

The Dark and Stormy rain jacket is breathable, comfortable, and adjustable. It is one of the most popular fishing gear clothing items in the U.S. It keeps wearers dry and comfortable, even in the wettest weather conditions. The coat is one of the most expensive items sold by Grundens but will last for years with proper care.

The Simms Challenger jacket is similar in design and construction to Grundens’ Dark and Stormy jacket.

The Challenger jacket is waterproof, flexible, and helps you stay warm against the elements. The liner on the jacket is flexible yet durable and allows for fluid movements while fishing. The jacket also comes with waterproof zippers and fleece-lined pockets.

The Challenger jacket is not as aesthetically pleasing as the Dark and Stormy rain jacket, but it has many features, including a kill switch attachment and a zippered chest pocket.

Grundens vs. Simms Conclusion

If you are a commercial or recreational fisherman, Grundens and Simms create a line of products you need to stay dry and warm. When comparing Grundens vs. Simms, it is crucial to consider each company’s experience, pricing, and customer service.

Both companies create high-quality, durable products made to withstand harsh weather elements. Grundens products are more affordable, but Simms offers better customer service and extended warranties. Both companies provide high-quality products, and you cannot go wrong with either choice.

Commercial fishing is a dangerous job that takes place in all types of weather. Commercial fishers can choose from various types of clothing to keep them cool or warm depending upon the temperature, but it is essential to dress appropriately for the weather.

No matter the weather, commercial fishers wear layers, deck boots, hats, and usually impermeable fishing bibs. They’ll wear wicking base layers, insulated mid-layers, and waterproof outer layers in cold and wet conditions. In warm areas, they wear lightweight fabrics with good UV protection.

If you have ever wondered what commercial fishers wear, you may be an aspiring commercial fisherman yourself or a recreational angler who wants to dress like the big dogs. In any case, here is more detail on the basic items fishers need to be comfortable in all types of weather.

All-Weather Gear for Commercial Fishermen

Commercial fishers need to have special gear to protect them from inclement weather or extreme temperatures. They need a few basic staples, whether they fish in the cold Bering Sea or the balmy Gulf of Mexico. Good shoes and a hat are two items fishermen wear at sea regardless of weather conditions or temperatures.

Boots

Having sturdy, durable deck boots is essential for keeping your feet dry while at sea. If you’re fishing during cold weather, deck boots can protect your feet from the temperature and help you get traction on slippery boat decks. Similarly, boots give you better traction on a boat, even in hot weather.

Hats

Like boots, hats are essential accessories for commercial fishers regardless of weather conditions. A snug beanie may be appropriate for cold weather to help fishermen keep their heads warm. A wide-brimmed hat may be more appropriate in hot temperatures or stormy weather conditions.

While fishing in balmy weather, fishermen who wear hats can shield their faces from the sun. Not only will a wide-brimmed hat protect tender facial skin from sun damage, but it will also help you stay cooler by deflecting the sun’s rays.

Whether they’re in cold or warm weather during a storm, commercial fishers wear wide-brimmed hats at sea. These hats deflect the sun during hot weather, and they also deflect rain and make it easier for fishers to see what they are doing.

Commercial Fishing Gear for Cold and Inclement Weather

Commercial fishermen who work in cold environments such as the Bering Sea need to stay warm. This environment is treacherous and often has high winds with wild waves, so it’s also important for the fishermen who work here to stay dry.

How to Stay Warm at Sea

High winds and freezing temperatures can make it difficult for commercial fishermen to stay warm. The best way to lock in warmth and protect yourself from extreme temperatures is to wear several layers.

A base layer is essential for warmth. Fishers wear a warm shirt and pants underneath their outerwear to help hold in body heat. There are many base-layer fishing boat clothing types, but items such as Grundens’ base layer fishing crew shirt work well to keep you warm at sea.

The middle layer can also serve as the outer layer if the temperature rises enough for you to shed a layer. A hoodie lined with microfleece is a great option that is comfortable and warm. Soft-shell jackets that are wind-resistant and waterproof are also good choices.

The outer layer of clothing is what commercial fishermen wear to protect their base and middle layers from the elements and lock in warmth. Fishing bibs and hoodies offer excellent protection from cold weather. Choose wind-resistant items to help you fight freezing temperatures from high winds.

Stay Dry On a Fishing Boat

Commercial fishers expect to get wet while on a boat, but if they allow themselves to work in soaked clothes, they are more at risk of developing dangerous health conditions due to the temperatures. The best way to stay relatively dry on a fishing boat is to wear waterproof items for the middle and outer layers of your clothing.

Bibs and waders are great options for repelling water. If they get damp, they will still keep your other layers of clothing dry. You can take off this outer layer of clothing and be warm and dry underneath.

However, it’s important to remember that you may need to take off your outer layer if the temperature rises and you get too hot. In this case, the middle layer will become the outer layer. Commercial fishermen wear waterproof middle layers of clothing for this reason. If they need to remove their outer layer of clothing, they are still protected from rain or seawater with a waterproof middle layer.

Summer Gear for Commercial Fisherman

Fishermen who work in warmer environments such as the southern Atlantic Ocean need not be concerned with staying warm at sea. The hot sun makes it difficult to dress in multiple layers, but fishermen in this environment still need to be protected from inclement weather.

fisher in warm weather gear

Beat the Heat

Commercial fishermen wear lightweight clothing that is both breathable and durable in warm environments. There is no reason to dress in three layers for warmth. However, you may still want to wear a base layer of lightweight, breathable clothing with an outer layer that consists of bibs or waders to protect you from rain or seawater.

Many commercial fishers find it helpful to dress in two layers early in the morning to keep them warm before the sun rises. As the temperature climbs later in the day, they shed the outer layer to stay cool.

Stay Dry and Cool

Rain can be just as much of a hindrance in warmer weather as in cold environments. Commercial fishermen can wear lightweight jackets that are waterproof to shield their clothing from the rain.

If you’re dealing with an occasional drizzle, you may prefer to put a bib on to keep yourself dry without hindering your freedom of movement. By staying comfortable and dry, you can stay safer while working, or even if you’re just out fishing recreationally.

Commercial fishermen have a dangerous job to do at sea, so they must wear the proper clothing to keep them comfortable on the boat. If you are wondering what fishermen wear at sea or looking for fishing boat clothing, look for items in the categories discussed above to find the gear you need for a successful fishing excursion.

I have yet to find the perfect sun shirt so I was excited to receive the Solstrale Hoodie from Grundéns.

I had planned on testing this shirt on a week-long trip down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho to try and recapture the glory of my youth. Unfortunately, the river trip was cancelled due to low water and a friend with a bad back.

Instead, I took the shirt on a four day camping trip to McCall, Idaho in September. The weather for this trip was sunny with highs in the mid 80’s and lows in the 30’s.

While I didn’t get as much fishing in as I had wanted, I was able to put this shirt through its paces. I hiked, ran, cooked and slept in this shirt for four days and have a good understanding of how it works.

The Solstrale Hoodie is a comfortable, long-sleeved shirt with full coverage sun protection. While the shirt is comfortable, it is a bit on the heavy/hot side and is best used for shoulder season fishing trips where the temps don’t rise above about 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Grundéns Solstrale Hoodie
$47.99
Pros:
  • Fits well and hangs on the body nicely, no weird bunches
  • Nice quality material that feels good against the skin
  • Sun protection is excellent at 50 UPF
  • Keeps odors and stains away
  • While a bit weird at first, the scuba hood is surprisingly useful
Cons:
  • A bit hot once temperatures reach the 80s or above, not as light and cool as expected
  • Long sleeves, but no thumb holes

Full disclosure, Grundéns gave this shirt to me to try out and review. The links in this article are affiliate links which means if you click on one and end up buying something, Outdoor Empire may get a commission. However, this review reflects my own opinions based on actually wearing the hoodie. Nobody paid for my favorable opinion and this article is not sponsored.

The Solstrale boasts an UPF rating of 50 and a host of other features that we will talk about later on.

Comfort and Fit

Man standing in forest in Grundens Solstrale shirt
The Solstrale fits well, looks good, and feels nice.

The first thing that I noticed when I took the Solstale Hoodie out of the packaging was how heavy it was. For a sun shirt I was expecting something a little more light and breezy. I found it to be more like a heavy base layer than a wear all day in the hot sun shirt.

Sure enough, when I started to set up camp on the first day I began to sweat almost immediately.

The Solstrale was, however, very comfortable once the temps dropped into the 70’s.

The material felt good next to the skin and I had no trouble wearing the shirt for the full 4 days. There was no irritating seams or bunching of materials.

I’m not sure how best to describe it, but the shirt just hung well on my body.

Sizing

I received a size large to try. I am 5’9” and a somewhat trim 170ish lbs and I always find myself trying to decide if I need a medium or large. Grundéns states that the fit is athletic which means that it is supposed to be more form fitting than baggy.

The large was baggy on me. I would imagine that I would need a medium to achieve the athletic fit that was advertised.

Hand with sleeve that is too long
The large was a tad big on me and the sleeves too long, but a medium would have been fine.

The sleeves were long, covering my hands. That would not have been a big deal if the sleeves had thumb holes, which they do not.

The end of the sleeves also felt slightly flared making it easy to push up over my elbows, but they would not stay there, forcing me to constantly push them up.

This problem would most likely have been fixed for me by wearing a medium.

My Take On the Features

According to the Grundéns website Solstrale is a Swedish word meaning “ray of sunlight.” Grundéns has managed to fit a whole suite of features into a simple sun shirt.

I will go over some of the features that I found useful. Grundéns has named some of these features “HeiQ technologies.”  An exhaustive 2 minute search of their website did not reveal what this stands for. I can only assume that it is some proprietary system.

1. Excellent Sun Protection

The Skin Cancer Foundation explains, “Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) indicates how much UV radiation (both UVB and UVA) a fabric allows to reach your skin. For example, a UPF 50 fabric blocks 98 percent of the sun’s rays and allows two percent (1/50th) to penetrate, thus reducing your exposure risk significantly.”

For reference, a basic cotton shirt has a UPF of 5, meaning that it will allow 1 out of 5 of the sun’s rays (about 20%) to hit your skin.

I have no reason to doubt Grundéns UPF 50 rating on this and I appreciate the UV protection.

2. Good Stink Suppression

I wore this shirt for 4 days straight, with no shower. During that time, I ran, hiked, fly fished, and hung out.

I also drove home alone in my truck while my wife and kids rode in another vehicle. I’m pretty sure that the two are not related?

With the HeiQ Fresh feature, this shirt did a great job of keeping the stink at bay and I was happy with how it smelled after 4 days. Not perfect, but much better than other shirts that I have worn.

3. Doesn’t Stain Easily

The shirt has one small stain on it. I am not easy on my gear and often misuse it on trips away from home. This goes for shirts as well.

The fact that this shirt only has one stain on it is a good indicator that whatever magic formula they use for the HeiQ Stain Away feature is working.

4. Doesn’t Have A/C

There are a lot of shirts that make some sort of temperature regulating claim and Grundéns calls out their HeiQ Smart Temp feature.

I don’t know if I buy into this, mostly I think that it is for marketing.

Overall, if the temp was over 80 degrees Fahrenheit this shirt was too hot. If it was below 40 degrees it was too cold.

This is about what I would expect, however, and in line with my experience with other clothing of this type.

The hoodie wicked moisture and sweat about as well as other sun shirts that I have worn.

5. Scuba Style Hood

Grundens Solstrale shirt hood worn on man
The atypical scuba hood on the Grundens Solstrale shirt seemed odd at first, but turns out it was useful and I liked it.

The hood was comfortable and functional. There is an elastic band around the scuba style hood that I wasn’t sure of at first.

After a couple of days wearing it, however, I came to appreciate this feature. The elastic allowed me to pull the shirt over my nose.

The elastic would hold the shirt in place so that I could protect my nose, ears and neck from the sun without even having to wear the hood.

I was pleased that the hood was so comfortable and did a good job covering my head and face.

Side view of man with shirt pulled up around neck and over nose
It was handy to pull the hood up just over the nose to keep sun off my neck and bugs out of my mouth.

Why Wear a Sun Shirt Outdoors?

When I was younger, I worked as a river guide on the Middle Fork. In the hubris of youth, I prided myself in being able to spend all summer on the water without a shirt. I would start out a ghostly white, turn bright red, then slowly transition into a nice tan.

As I’ve grown older, I no longer get to spend all summer outside. Now, as more of a weekend warrior, with the occasional week-long trip thrown in as work and family will allow, the pattern is more burn on the weekends, peel during the week and repeat. No killer tan. Just disapproving looks from my wife.

I have also become more worried about things that my past, immortal self, didn’t worry about, like skin cancer.

I’ve tried sunscreen, but hate the greasy, almost suffocating feel. That leaves me with mechanical sun protection, like sun shirts and wide brimmed hats, to protect my sensitive skin.

Conclusion and Best Use

Man crouched down fly fishing

The Grundéns Solstrale Hoodie is a comfortable sun shirt. It blocks out the majority of the sun’s rays and covers what needs to be covered for a long day of outdoor activities in the sun.

I would recommend this shirt for fishing trips that happen in the spring and fall when temperatures don’t get above 80 degrees. For summer, I would prefer something with lighter material.

Next September I will be wearing this shirt as I once again float the Middle Fork of the Salmon. Water levels and my friend’s back rehab permitting.

Guys I know wear all kinds of footwear when they go fishing. Bad weather boots, sneakers, flip flops and bare feet have kept anglers surefooted (or not) for years.

It’s hard to find a comfortable shoe that you’ll want to wear both on deck fishing and in town dining.

I had the chance to get a pair of Grundéns SeaKnit Boat Shoes and I’ve been wearing them a lot the past couple months. Around town, fishing, and walking the dog, I’ve done a little bit of everything in these shoes. I’m even wearing them right now as I write this.

Man walking on a boat dock next to pontoon boat
I’ve been wearing these a lot and I still like them.

The Grundéns SeaKnit Boat Shoes are comfortable, super lightweight and grippy. Great for staying upright on a boat or bass fishing, they even look good as everyday wear. While they lack support with a loose fit and no half sizes, they’re a great outdoor sneaker whether or not you like to fish.

I have now worn these to the point that they no longer look new. So I’m ready to give you my list of pros and cons followed by a detailed hands-on review.

Just so you know, Grundéns gave me these shoes to try out and review. The links in this article are affiliate links which means if you click on one and end up buying something, we may get a commission. However, this review reflects my own opinions based on actually wearing the shoes a lot. Nobody paid for my favorable opinion and this article is not sponsored.

Grundens SeaKnit Boat Shoe
$87.99
Pros:
  • Super lightweight and comfy
  • Good grip on a boat or rainy street
  • Clean minimalist design that looks way better than other knit shoes
  • Slip on and off with ease
  • Wide sole provides stable footing
  • High quality materials and construction
  • Multi-purpose, good for both casual use and fishing
Cons:
  • Fit is rather loose on my slightly more narrow than average feet
  • Nylon knit material on back of heel goes up pretty high and rubs my heel raw without tall socks
  • Standard retail price of $110 is a bit high compared to similar shoes from competitors

First Impressions

Collage of different angles of the Grundens Sea Knit boat shoe

While I’ve always sort of thought of knit shoes as something only the newly bred or nearly dead might wear, these shoes certainly improved my perception.

When I first put these shoes on it was good vibes all around. They look good with simple clean lines and a nice shape that is neither bulky nor invisible.

Grundéns offers the SeaKnit in two colors: anchor or metal. The metal color is a light gray with bright orange laces and accents. Anchor is a nice dark gray with light gray accents. Mine are the anchor color and they look great with just about any shorts or pants.

I also thought they felt really good on the first try. They went on easy and were immediately comfortable. It was a great start.

Functional Deck Fishing Shoes

Bass laying on boat deck next to man's foot
These shoes were comfortable for a full day on a bass boat.

I wore these shoes my first time bass fishing and can confirm that they served their purpose well. They’re stable, grippy, breathable and comfortable even when on your feet all day long.

Knit shoes have started showing up from just about every major shoe manufacturer over the past few years. And boat shoes have been around for decades.

Grundéns set out to bring those two types of shoes together and create a functional deck fishing shoe. I dare say they succeeded and the result was a comfortable fishing sneaker.

Grundéns SeaKnit Boat Shoe Features

The main features that make the Grundéns SeaKnit Boat Shoe interesting are:

1. Air-cooled Nylon Upper

Grundens Sea Knit Boat Shoes sitting on a boat dock
The nylon material is very breathable and keeps the funky smells out.

While it’s not waterproof, nylon wicks water well and it dries fast. Water beads up in the fabric when the shoes are new, so I assume they’re treated with something.

The 100% nylon knit upper breathes extremely well, which is great for hot days on a boat. And it doesn’t harbor bacteria so they don’t get stinky from fish and sweat.

2. Puddle Deep Water Tight Layer

Grundens Sea Knit boat shoe wet
The PU overlay helps keep a little water out, especially what splashes around on a boat deck.

There is a polyurethane overlay that covers the lower part of the nylon to about ¾ inch above the midsole. Again, not waterproof, but very functional when on deck.

It’s enough to keep your feet dry when fish slap around the boat or when walking through morning dew on the lawn. Just don’t plan on walking through water and coming out dry.

3. Grippy Rubber Sole

Bottom of rubber sole of Grundens Sea Knit Boat Shoe
The siped gum rubber outsole of the SeaKnit boat shoe.

Unlike nearly every other knit athletic shoe which has an EVA foam outsole that is slicker than the dickens, the SeaKnit has natural gum rubber soles. And they’re siped for even better traction.

While there are shoes with even better grip, these are plenty sufficient for deck fishing.

Water splashing on shoes on edge of boat deck
As long as you have stable footing, they grip to a wet boat deck really well.

When I threw some water on the deck and ran my foot across, it seemed a bit slick. But once pressure was applied with my body weight, no slippage.

Whether walking down a wet street or on a slick boat deck, they’ve never slipped out from under me under normal conditions.

4. Cushy Stable Midsole

Comfy, cushy midsoles keep the shoes light and had me wearing them everywhere.

I know EVA foam has become perhaps the most common midsole material of our time among athletic shoes and the like. It’s lightweight, comfortable, and reasonably durable. As is this shoe.

What I like about the midsole on the SeaKnit is the shape. The base bulges out to the sides under the heel and ball of your foot just enough to be extra stable without looking dumb.

This helps a ton on a boat to keep your footing and not roll an ankle with all the humming and hawing. It’s definitely a thoughtful touch for a deck fishing shoe.

They also float. You know, in case you fall off the boat and lose your shoes, I guess.

5. Easy to Slip On and Off

While these shoes have laces, they’re mainly for looks. You can’t really crank them tight even if you wanted to, but it doesn’t matter.

I’ve only tied them once, the first time I put them on. Since then I treat them like slip-ons.

The SeaKnits are easy to slip on and off. The pull loop is handy, but the loop is too small to get your finger into so I just use it more like a tab.

Fit and Feel

These are the type of shoe that neither offer nor require a super technical fit. They’re comfortable and flexible and I surmise that they would adapt to almost any foot shape.

That said, they don’t offer any half sizes, only whole sizes. I usually run a 10.5 US and the 11 SeaKnits I have are pretty loose on me. My feet are slightly narrow, but sizing is probably true.

With the generous fit and a roomy toe box, they ought to feel great on wide feet.

The footbed forms to your foot nicely and feels good right away, no break-in required.

These shoes are not, however, supportive. They let your feet move around a lot. Knit shoes have no rigid chassis so don’t expect ankle support.

The soft upper also provides no protection for your feet from dropping an ice chest or a big fish on your toes. So watch out!

What I Don’t Like

Collage of spot on heel where shoes rubbed
This is where the shoes rubbed my ankle red just above the heel.

The first two days I wore these shoes I wore short socks. After just half a day running errands, driving, and a little walking, the shoes rubbed my heels to where I had raw red spots.

Maybe these would have become blisters, but I gave the shoes a break to let my heels heal. The next time I wore them I was sure to wear crew socks.

Tall socks don’t usually look cool with shorts, but they made the nuisance go away.

This heel rub issue was especially uncomfortable when it was hot and I got a little sweaty. So I can only imagine how bad it would suck saltwater fishing in the heat or with sweaty, wet, bare feet.

The issue is that the nylon knit goes up pretty high in the back. New out of the box, perhaps that part was still pretty stiff. I think it will loosen up over time, and maybe my feet are just too baby soft. Just be aware that they may rub your heel weird.

Besides that, there is a funny looking pucker of the knit material by the inside laces. This too, though, might just be due to my funny shaped feet. And it’s minor, not a big deal at all.

It’s a minor thing, but this part of the shoe would pucker and look funny.

Then there’s the price. At $110 retail it’s a little high compared to competitors like the Columbia Tamiami, but about on par with the Sperry 7 Seas. Though, they are from a cool company and are high quality, so that should be considered.

When to Choose These Shoes

The Grundéns SeaKnit is a a great shoe for:

  • Anglers who like to fish from a boat, dock, or anywhere else
  • Everyday use at the office or running errands
  • Light outdoor activity like walking the dog
  • Spending a lot of time on your feet (medical professionals, retail, etc.)

Do not wear SeaKnits for:

  • Hiking (try these instead)
  • Fishing in bad weather (Grundéns has better footwear for that)
  • Outdoor activities that require a lot of foot support

With the comfort of a slip-on sneaker, the Grundéns SeaKnit boat shoe is a comfortable all around casual or outdoor shoe. I wouldn’t wear them hiking, but I’d take them on a trip to Cabo. There, I’d be happy wearing them on the boat all day and in town all night.
